Crash on the Highway – Hurray for the Riff Raff

There are some songs that feel like they’re looking with you. Not at you, not through you — but beside you, down some cracked and distant road. This one does that.

Crash on the Highway by Hurray for the Riff Raff isn’t loud. It doesn’t raise its voice. But something in it carries the ache of a siren heard too late, a story breaking open at the side of the road.

I don’t remember the first time I heard it — which is unusual. Most songs leave a timestamp in me. But this one slipped in quietly, probably on a drive, and kept me company before I even knew it had moved in.

The band is fronted by Alynda Segarra, born in the Bronx, raised by punk, and somehow ended up channeling folk ghosts and dusty Americana like they were always part of her bloodstream. Hurray for the Riff Raff isn’t easy to define — and that’s exactly why I love them. There’s heartache, rebellion, sanctuary, and spirit stitched into every track.

This song in particular feels like aftermath. The moment after the impact, when you’re standing by the road with your thoughts still rattling. It’s sorrowful, but it’s also awake.

If Fool’s Game was about the slow walk into something you already know will end badly…
Then Crash on the Highway is the sound of standing still in the silence that follows.

Drive safe.
